All races follow out-and-back courses heading eastward from the starting line at Mosquito Road. For each distance, the path goes up a steady 3% grade to the turnaround point, and the second half of the race is downhill all the way to the finish. The 5K, 10K, and 15K courses are run entirely on a paved bike path. The pavement ends at about 5.6 miles into the half marathon course, and the remainder of the distance to the turnaround point is run on a dirt and gravel path. The total gain in elevation for the half marathon is 1043 feet.
5K Course (341ft Ascent)
The 5K course turns around right before Centennial Lane.
10K Course (651ft Ascent)
The 10K course turns around shortly before Parkway Drive, not long after crossing Highway 50 on the foot bridge.
15K Course (659ft Ascent)
The 15K course turns around shortly after passing Los Trampas Drive.
Half-Marathon (1,237ft Ascent)
The half marathon course turns around at the very end of the trail, where a chain-link fence separates you from Highway 50. The pavement ends at Halcon Road.
The course is well-marked with signs at every intersection and chalk lines on the ground in important locations. Mile marker signs are posted for all distances, and a halfway sign is posted for the half marathon. (Click image for larger view.)
The combined elevation profile for all four races is shown below. (Click image for larger view.)
There are two well-stocked aid stations on the course, and they are shown on the maps above. One aid station is located at the James Marshall monument, and the other is located where the fire road meets the Monroe Ridge Trail.
For 10K and half marathon runners, aid is also available at the finish line as you pass by to begin a new loop.
We have added a new two-person relay race to this year’s event. There are separate categories for teams consisting of two women, two men, or mixed. The first person in the relay runs approximately 7.5 miles, which is mostly uphill, until they reach the Halcon Road aid station for the second time after turning around at the end of the trail. The second person in the relay runs the remaining 5.6 miles, which is all downhill. The second person wears the bib number, and the first person has the same number marked on their hand.
Only one person per team needs to register for the relay race. Transportation to and from the hand-off location at the Halcon Road aid station is the responsibility of the runners.
To get to the hand-off location from the starting line on Mosquito Rd., take Broadway east to Schnell School Rd., get on Highway 50 and go east about five miles. Turn right on Camino Heights Dr. Turn left on Vista Tierra Dr, and then turn right on Camino Hills Dr. Finally, turn right on Halcon Rd, and you will see the aid station at the trail crossing.
